Cambridgeshire Education ICT Service Fortnightly Briefing

Friday 13th February 2009

IMPORTANT: Sophos Maintenance Update February 2009

Purpose:   Inform Schools and ICT Teams of requirement to restart all Computer Systems

Audience: School ICT Teams

PLEASE ENSURE THIS INFORMATION IS PASSED ON TO YOUR ICT TEAM.

Sophos maintenance updates at the end of February 2009 will require a reboot of your endpoint computers.

Sophos are incorporating a number of maintenance updates to Sophos Anti-Virus Security and Control release in the last week of February.
For these updates to take effect, you will need to reboot computers. Sophos have suppressed endpoint reboot requests by default, so that requests will only be sent to your Sophos management console.

The reboot will enable the installation of:
  • driver updates for integrated anti-rootkit in Sophos Anti-Virus
The reboot is necessary because Windows forces a reboot to complete an installation whenever there’s a driver change.
Existing protection will not be compromised in the interim before the required reboot is completed.

Purpose:     IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Audience:   All school staff  involved in ICT purchases

All schools should have received a copy of the Service Level Agreement folder, via the School Courier service, for you to consider the extensive range of ICT options Education ICT Service are offering schools during 2009-10.

Also included in the folder is a copy of our 2008 Annual Report: the facts and figures, which we hope will provide you with some interesting details about our work with schools.  We have also enclosed a second copy of the 2008 Annual Report, for the attention of your Chair of Governors and would appreciate if you would forward to them.

Once you have made a decision on your school’s requirements, to allow us time to make appropriate staffing arrangements for the new financial year, we would be grateful if you would return your sign-up form by 27th February 2009.

Hardware Price Increases

Purpose:   Procurement Pricing
Audience: Headteachers, Bursar, Office & ICT Staff in Cambridgeshire Schools

Due to the current economic climate (£ versus $/€) we have noticed that many hardware manufacturers have raised their prices in this first quarter and could plan to raise them again at short notice.  A big culture shock to the IT market, as over the past 15 years technology has only decreased in price. Sadly, these rises will be reflected in our prices to schools, however we continue to be competitive along with providing best value and service.

If you receive a quotation from Education ICT Service,  we ask that you check the expiry date, as this might have been shortened to 7 days.  We hope that prices will stabilise in the near future.

Any questions regarding the procurement of ICT hardware, please contact the Procurement Team on 01223 566456 or email sales@ict.cambsed.net
