Cambridgeshire Education ICT Service Fortnightly Briefing

Friday 31st October 2008

IMPORTANT: Critical Microsoft Vulnerability

Purpose:   Alert ICT Teams to Security Issue with Microsoft Operating Systems

Audience: School ICT Teams

PLEASE ENSURE THIS INFORMATION IS PASSED ON TO YOUR ICT TEAM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Microsoft has released a security update that fixes a remote code execution vulnerability in the Windows Server Service.

This is a serious vulnerability and targeted attacks have been seen using this vulnerability to compromise fully-patched Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers.

This vulnerability could, in certain situations, allow a hacker to gain access to your computer and run arbitrary code.

Please note systems running within CCN will be protected by perimeter firewalls. This notice is being sent out to alert those staff who may take their Laptops off CCN.

For this reason Microsoft have released this as an emergency fix - i.e. outside the usual Monthly update.

·         WHERE SCHOOLS HAVE SCHEDULED TECHNICAL SUPPORT VISITS, YOUR TECHNICIAN WILL CARRY OUT THE NECESSARY UPDATE ON THEIR NEXT VISIT
