Cambridgeshire Education ICT Service Fortnightly Briefing

Becta’s Data Handling & Security Guidance for School

Purpose:    Important Information
Audience:  Headteacher and ICT Managers

Becta have officially released the updated and new Becta data handling guidance which can be found at www.becta.org.uk/schools/datasecurity
The guides also now include relevant recommendations from the recently published HMG Security Policy Framework, including that the Government Protective Marking Scheme should be used to indicate the sensitivity of data. The revised guidance is more applicable across the education sector. It’s more pragmatic, with an emphasis on taking a risk management approach to data security. It also includes an additional document -  Dos and Don’ts "  is a common sense guide that senior leaders can make available to staff to ensure everyone within an organisation knows how they should be helping keep data secure.

Also available is Cambridgeshire County Audit and Information Governance Summary of Becta’s "Good practice in information handling in schools"

This document aims to distil the key messages outlined in Data Handling Procedures in Government so they are applicable to schools and is intended for school leaders, senior leadership teams, network managers and other members of staff who have responsibility for handling and securing data. This summary guide provides a description of the procedures and suggests possible technical and operational solutions that can assist schools in minimising the risk of data security incidents and complying with existing legislation. These good practice guides should be read by school network managers and those responsible for implementing technical solutions. The underlying principle of this guidance is that schools should do everything within their power to ensure the safety and security of any material of a personal or sensitive nature.

Key change in DCSF School Workforce Census Guidance

Purpose:   updated information
Audience: head teachers / principal administrators in all schools

At briefings in November, December and January, schools were informed that they needed to maintain a "Service Agreement" record for any staff employed by the Local Authority but working in the school. This could include peripatetic staff, ICT technicians and possibly catering staff. DCSF now advise that these Service Agreement records will NOT be required. Schools will also be contacted directly by DCSF about this. The requirement to provide a Service Agreement record for non-LA staff remains. The text of the DCSF statement appears on the School Workforce Census portal page (resource ID 4465).
