 Local Web Caching Solutions

Purpose:    Important Information

Audience:  Headteacher/Technical Staff

Various companies have been delivering mailshots to schools indicating their caching products can speed up your network and deliver content filtering for Web browsing within your school.

Please be aware that Cambridgeshire County Council have implemented a centralised filtering system (Protex) which provides a sophisticated mechanism for filtering across all E2BN schools. This filtering system allows for the addition of local filter appliances which integrate fully into this network. 3rd party filtering solutions are unlikely to integrate in the same way.

A Web filter/cache within your school will only speed up Web browsing and will not have any effect on your local network performance; it has been noted that some of the flyers being sent to schools may be misleading.

  •  At present the only recommended local filtering and caching solution is based on the Protex system.
Please contact ICT Support (ict.support@cambridgeshire.gov.uk) if you have any queries or questions on the filtering system, and options for local caching and filtering.

Extending your Network

Purpose:    Important Information

Audience:  Headteacher

If you are intending to add new network points onto your current cabling infrastructure, as mentioned in the previous item, you need to ensure the work is carried out by a MOLEX accredited, warranted cabling contractor to ensure your 10/15/20/25 year warranty is not made void.

For any issues, advice and guidance you may need, or if you are unsure of the rules surrounding the acceptable use policy of CCN, please refer to the Schools CCN Information and Guidance document available on the portal at:
