Please find attached a letter from Hazel Coulter, Head of the Education ICT Service, about the some of the factors schools should take in to account when considering their technical support arrangements.
Secondary User Groups will be held on 17th October in March Library and 21st October at CPDC, 9.30 - 12.30. Letters will be going out next week, but further details can be found on the portal by searching for SIMS.
There will be
continue to be a standard filtering regime which schools will receive
automatically.
Alternatively,
schools will be able to choose from four different levels of age-appropriate
filtering:
·
primary - for younger
pupils
·
middle - this intermediate level
will be the default service provided to
schools
·
secondary - for older
pupils
·
adult - filtered, but suitable for
staff and sixth formers
Choosing anything other than the
middle level will require some changes to the browser settings on all online
computers. For most schools with fileservers on their network, this process can
be done centrally. In schools where a fileserver is not used, each computer will
need to be visited individually. We will provide schools with a clear briefing
so that their technical staff or support providers can make any necessary
changes.
In addition, schools may purchase their own Appliansys cache server and manage the filtering regime themselves. The ICT Service can procure these servers for schools on favourable terms. Besides managing the filtering system, they can help schools to make the most of their broadband connection by speeding up access to regularly used online resources.
To coincide with the changing of the clocks, we will be working with the county's road safety team to run this online, real-time Net-Detectives activity on the morning of Wednesday 2nd November. It is aimed at the 9-11 age range.
If you don't know about Net-Detectives, check out the information at

To register an interest and get more information about the activity (doesn't commit you to doing it), please email projects.starz@webmail.digitalbrain.com giving school name, contact name and your email address.
This activity is free to Starz subscribers. Other schools may participate but there will be a charge of £50.
