Karol Jetting

Karol Jetting was born in 1730 in Bratislava and he died in 1790. He is buried at Ondrejský´s cemetery in the same city.

He spoke a few world languages and he worked in Vienna and in London. From London he was supposed to go to Senegal to work as a king´ s officer. From that moment on his real travelling adventures began...

The sailing- ship that was to get him to Africa was ship wrecked in a big storm. The whole crew was captured by cannibals and he was sold into slavery. After some time being a slave and leading a miserable life, he was bought by the British consul in Morocco and came back to London happily. His adventures caught the interest of the king so he named him as the consul in Marseilles. And the events occurred again...

As soon as the ship left London, she got lost in a storm and the Tunis pirates attacked the ship.

Jetting became a slave for the second time. Later on he was sold to work the galley on a slave ship. After being shipwrecked again he found himself on a desert island and his long "robinsonade" something very similar to the one of Robinson Crusoe - the British sailor - began. He met Friday as well - a French captain that was thrown off a ship by sailors in a mutiny. After a hard life Jetting finally came back to London and then to Bratislava.

After his death his notes were published and they became very popular.
