In this lesson children will use photographs of older and more recent property to identify the similarities and differences. They will look at different features of Victorian houses, focusing on stained glass, and will use a paint program to flood fill outlines. A file of images is provided W55 History Y1X.

In this activity children will look at a range of wartime information posters, identifying their message and categorising them. In this lesson the children will hear the story of Boudicca’s rebellion against the Romans. They will consider different interpretations of history and use a drag and drop technique to match statements made by Romans or Celts in an interview with a national ‘newspaper’. A framework is provided - W 55 History Y3X. Finally children will cut and paste an illustration for their newspapers.

Children will use the features of a word processor to create a historical glossary, which can be added to as the topic progresses. This lesson thus links history, English and ICT.

Children use a paint package to create a replica of an Egyptian tomb painting. This activity will take two sessions to complete, and its focus needs to be on history, rather than ICT or Art and Design. A sheet of facts about tomb paintings is supplied.

Children use the internet and other sources to search for factual information about a famous person and use ICT to write an obituary as it might have appeared in the newspapers of the time.

Children write a newspaper giving one perspective on a conflict. Although this lesson is based around the conflict between Athens and Sparta in the 5th century BC the activity can be adapted for use with any history unit that involves conflict between two groups of people.

Children will use a large database on the internet to search for the locations of common Viking place names http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/didyouknow/. They will analyse the information; determining which modern place names are probably derived from Viking settlements.
