Progression in ICT Capability
Introduction to the materials
Information and communications technologies are embedded in our society. Children are growing up at a time of rapid technological change and are adopting these technologies as a matter of course both at school, at home and in their leisure time. Schools have a responsibly to ensure that children develop the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding in order to be successful citizens of the future. In line with “Every Child Matters” children will need ICT capability to achieve economic well being and will need to understand electronic communications in order to enjoy and achieve and to stay safe.
The purpose of these materials is to assist you in both understanding what ICT capability is and in further developing opportunities where that capability can be developed. They will promote a greater understanding of standards in ICT and help to raise children’s attainment within the context of a personalised curriculum. While the National Curriculum for ICT determines the legal requirements for pupils aged 5-11 and the QCA scheme has provided a structure to deliver ICT capability this is now 'of its time'. Many schools have started to move towards embedding ICT opportunities within appropriate curriculum contexts. These materials are intended to support this process and be the possible basis of an ICT scheme of work for a school. They will assist schools in reflecting on, and further developing their current practice fit for pupils of the twenty first century.
