Research

adapted from the renewed frameworks for Literacy

F

Choose what to look at on CD or the Internet. Respond, talk and ask questions about what is seen and heard.

eg Look at CBBC website, Sebastian Swan Stories from www.naturegrid.gov.uk , or Starz Story Circle Texts. Use role play software such as At the Doctors, At the Vets, At the cafe.

1

Explore and learn from teacher chosen sites or CD's that answers to questions can be found from a range of different information sources Analyse how information texts work, particularly non-chronological reports, focusing on layout and language features.

eg Use the web or CD to navigate and find the answer to a question, use an electronic dictionary to support the understanding of alphabetical organisation and find the definition of words.

2

Investigate non-fiction ICT texts on similar themes to show that they can give different information and present similar information in different ways. Explore sources of information using menues, indexes and key words to aid search. Start to use hyperlinks and hotspots to navigate. Begin to record and share information found on the internet.

eg Look for same information on different websites such as interpretations of same fairy tale...   Compare differences and similarities between two locations,.. record findings onto a given template.....Read and compare paper and ICT-based non-chronological reports

3

Recognise and use different types of information from a range ICT based sources. Identify how different texts are organised, including on screen reference texts, magazines and leaflets.

eg Research a particular area (based on own interest or wider curriculum) sites chosen and made available to the children. Lead towards the creation of a factfile incorporating text and graphics,

4

Use knowledge of different organisational features of texts to find information effectively and follow straightforward lines of enquiry.

 eg Find out about....

5

Within appropriate curriculum contexts, locate information in text on screen confidently and efficiently through using site navigational features skimming to gain overall sense of text; scanning to locate specific information; close reading to aid understanding. Know that it is important to recognise source. Know how to identify the origin of pages on the internet in order to help evaluate point of view and the author.

eg Sift through passages for relevant information and present ideas in note form that are effectively grouped and linked.

6

Appraise a text quickly, deciding on its value, quality or usefulness. Understand underlying themes, causes and points of view. Interpret findings, check plausibility and recognise that poor quality information leads to unreliable results.

eg Children read, explore, discuss and compare a wide range of journalistic news reports, in a variety of formats, on paper and on screen .....listen to and compare a number of news reports in oral (radio) format.

Beyond Year 6

Beyond Y6 Interpret findings, taking account of plausibility and bias recognising that information requires more than a literal interpretation.
