Developing Ideas and Making Things Happen

Modelling and Simulations

F

eg Use remote control cars to navigate around objects and furniture.

Use musical play mat to make a tune

1

eg Children explore cause and effect by using different colours in a portrait to reflect different ways they feel

 2

Use ICT to explore real and imaginary situations to solve problems and consider the results of actions taken. Begin to identify patterns.

eg Children answer what if questions using a visual simulation of feeding animals and the relationship of food to number and can explain what has happened and why.

 3

Explore a model or simulation and use understanding gained to change/ improve things and solve problems by identifying the rule.

eg Children use a function machine in mathematics to demonstrate a model exploring input and output (rules and variables)

 4

Make informed and appropriate choices when using a model or simulation. Begin to change options or variables and note the effect this has.

eg Children use logo to create a pattern using a range of same sized squares

 5

Use ICT based models to explore variables to solve problems. Recognise and discover patterns and relationships. Hypothesise ‘what would happen if…?

eg Use a pre-prepared spreadsheet to calculate the cost of ingredients for biscuits. Pupils answer questions about price or quality changes

 6

Estimate, compare and make deductions, ask questions, test hypotheses and engage in simple modelling activities. Add and amend a given ICT model to solve a problem through a review of the rules and variable.

eg Children explore the relationship between area and perimeter using a spread sheet

Beyond Year 6

Create a simple model using a range of variables understanding that changing data within variables and variables can change the way the model behaves and can predict the effect of these changes.
