Year 6 - The Meaning of Life Lesson 1 • Explain to the pupils that they are going to play a game in which they have to read a statement and decide where to place it on the board. They should justify the position to the rest of their group. At the end of the game other members of the group can challenge any positioning of cards • You could subsequently lead the discussion and encourage pupils to share their ideas: Which were the best ideas? Which were not so good? Did everyone agree? Which statements caused the most discussion within the group? Why do you think that was? Where do these ideas come from? Some are from religions, can you identify them? Why do you think these originate from religions? Did you notice anything as you played the game? • Focusing on making the world a better place, ask pupils to reflect on the statements they have read, and consider how members of different faiths might have positioned the statements. “I think a Muslim would… Because...” • It is important that pupils justify their response, as this demonstrates an understanding of religious and spiritual questions • These suggestions should be written down for use in the next RE lesson • Finally, in the lesson pupils look at the questionnaire and, following a few moments of quiet reflection, they complete this on paper. Lesson 2 • During the second lesson in the RE suite, remind the pupils how to locate a bookmarked site. When all the pupils have found the site, remind them how to search the online database • In pairs, pupils then check their ideas against the authentic comments from young people of the religions presented in the database, and report back to the class • Pupils complete the online questionnaire with their own thoughts and ideas, recorded in the previous lesson and submit to the database • Did pupils modify any of their responses in the light of what they had read on the database?
